Skin, Health & Beauty 101: Top 10 free things you should be doing for your face - Examiner Posted: 08 Sep 2010 12:42 PM PDT Here are the Nashville Skin, Health & Beauty Examiner's top ten list of free things you should be doing for your face. 1. Protect Your Face from the Sun Practice safe sun and avoid the sun as much as possible between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. when the sun's rays are the strongest. Wear a sunscreen, hat and sunglasses when you have to be out in the sun, even in the winter. 2. Don't Smoke Next to the sun, smoking is probably the worst thing you can do to your skin. Smoking decreases blood flow in the outer layer of the skin and deprives the skin of the oxygen and nutrients it needs. Smoking also damages your skin's elasticity by effecting its collagen and elastin and causes wrinkles around the mouth and cheeks from drawing on cigarettes, cigars or pipes. 3. Keep Your Hands Away from Your Face & Never Pop Pimples Reduce pimples and avoid acne with proper skin care. Touching your face with fingers that have touched door knobs, counter tops, and other public surfaces can carry bacteria straight to your face. Popping pimples can irritate acne, casing blemishes to become inflamed and infected. 4. Wash Your Face When you Come Home at Night Don't wait until bedtime to cleanse your face of makeup, dirt and grime. Cleanse it with a gentle cleanser when you get home in the evening. 5. Avoid Washing Your Face in Hot Water Hot water can dry and irritate your face, so avoid washing your face in hot water. 6. Be Gentle with the Skin on Your Face The skin on your face is delicate and thin and needs to be treated carefully. Wash your face gently, exfoliate gently, and pat your face dry without rubbing. 7. Eat Foods with Omega-3 Fatty Acids Omega-3 Fatty Acids that help hydrate the skin and keep it supple and firm are found in salmon, flaxseed, almonds, and other fruits and vegetables. Your face is one of the first places to show a lack of hydration. Water flushes toxins out of the body which might otherwise build up in the skin's pores. It is possible these toxins contribute to acne and other skin irritation, so proper hydration may help reduce acne. Drinking plenty of water may also help reduce circles under the eyes and may help plump out some fine lines in the face. Although the exact relationship between drinking water and the skin's appearance isn't known, drinking water is necessary for overall health which definitely effects the appearance of your face. 9. Get Plenty of Exercise Exercise carries the oxygen and nutrients needed for collagen production to the skin. To keep skin firm and toned, work in time for at least three 30-minute workouts a week. (Top 10 free or nearly free things you can do for your face) 10. Get Plenty of Sleep Cut back on drinking caffeine and watching late-night TV so that your body is ready for sleep at night. Lack of sleep causes the body to release more cortisol -- a stress hormone which can lead to acne, as well as causing sensitive and dry skin. Vegetarian Diet Health Benefits - Healthier Hair and Nails - Associated Content Posted: 08 Sep 2010 09:00 AM PDT As children, we are often taught that the protein in meat is necessary for maintaining healthy nails and hair. Is this really true though? Could eliminating meat and even meat byproducts from your diet help ensure that Vegetarians and Vegans Have Healthier Hair If you've tried every product on the market to enhance your hair's natural beauty, it may be time to consider some dietary changes. People who follow vegetarian or vegan diets are known to have hair which is stronger, healthier and shinier. Some vegetarians and vegans even report that their hair seems to grow quicker than average, though this claim cannot be supported by medical evidence. Grow Healthier Nails on a Vegetarian or Vegan Diet When you go on a vegetarian or vegan diet, you may have no more need for nail strengthening products. Nails are said to be the best indicator of how healthy a person is. Vegetarians and vegans tend to have nails which are both stronger and healthier. They often look better too. This was first brought to my attention by my sister, who has been a vegetarian for most of her life. Her nails are often mistaken for acrylics. Not only do a vegetarian or vegan's nails tend to be stronger and healthier, but they also may grow quicker than the nails of people who eat meat. Getting Protein in a Vegetarian Diet While the protein in meat is thought to increase your chances of having healthy hair and nails, it is important to keep in mind that there are plenty of other dietary sources of protein. Beans and soy are both good options. If you are planning to stick to a vegetarian diet, which consists of animal byproducts, eggs and dairy products are also good sources of protein. Remember that other nutrients and vitamins play an essential role in the overall health of your hair and nails as well.
