Health and Beauty Companies Changing to Green Packaging - Associated Content Posted: 23 Sep 2010 01:07 PM PDT With more and more awareness on the effects of global warming and the necessity of recycling, more companies are deciding to change packaging to recyclable materials. This week two Whole Foods announced that their changes will take effect next month and will affect 1300 personal care product suppliers. They will require all suppliers of their health and beauty care products to package their products in recyclable or recycled materials. They will require non toxic packaging and that suppliers use glass whenever possible. To the Whole Foods family, this is nothing new. Their store brands products have already began their package changes and are thrilled that their suppliers will now follow these rules too. These rules will affect suppliers worldwide. Being that Whole Foods is the leader in natural and organic foods, it is natural that they would follow new guidelines for packaging to become more earth friendly. Proctor and Gamble have announced that three of their major health and beauty brands will follow this movement and switch to recyclable packaging over the next couple of years. Pantene Pro-V, Cover Girl and Max Factor will be the companies that will require the new packaging, but I am assuming that Proctor and Gamble's other brands will follow suit. Pantene has announced that their packaging will be made from sugarcane. This will help aid in the future global warming. Plastic bottles and packages are filling landfills throughout the United States. It seems that the plastic needs to be made to be more recyclable than it is currently regulated to be. Max Factor brand is not sold in the United States anymore, but the company is still selling the brand overseas and is aware that the packaging needs to be more earth friendly wherever it is sold. Exposing Skin to the Sun Perhaps the worst thing we do to our face, hands and other parts of the skin is exposing it to the sun too often for too long, especially in Nashville and other parts of the South. However, the sun causes damage in Northern climes and at cool high altitudes where people are tempted not to be concerned about the rays, so too much sun is a universal problem. Wearing shorts, tanks tops and no hat invites sun damage to much of our skin. Wear protective clothing and stay in the shade whenever possible. Find a good moisturizing sunscreen and apply it every two hours and again after getting in the water. I recommend Anti-Age Skin Protectant Cream SPF 15 Sunscreen. Keep in mind melanoma of the skin increased by 7.7.% among men from 2003 to 2005, and by 2.9% among women from 1993 to 2005, according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. (See How to practice safe sun.) 2. Not Drinking Plenty of Water Water is a primary ingredient of skin and has a role in removing impurities and perhaps even "plumping" the skin. Although there is heavy debate on whether or not we need 8 glasses of water a day (we probably don't) or whether or not water is preferred over other liquids (some studies show caffeinated beverages provide as much hydration as pure water), there is no doubt we need to keep our bodies and skin hydrated. (See Top 10 free things to do for your face.) 3. Using Antibacterial Soap While antibacterial soaps and cleansers may help prevent the spread of germs, they are harsh on your hands and skin. Try to keep antibacterial cleansers on the palms and underside of fingers rather than rubbing it all over your hands. Never use anything but protective facial washes on your face which are designed to meet your specific skin needs. 4. Cleaning Supplies & Chemicals If antibacterial soaps are harsh on hands, imagine what the various chemicals we use for cleaning and disinfecting our homes to them. Always wear gardening gloves when working in the garden, and inside, rubber gloves or latex if you are not allergic to latex 5. Picking Pimples, Moles, Insect Bites, and Scabs While blemishes, insect bites, poison ivy and other irritations usually won't harm your skin permanently, picking and scratching them will leave permanent scars as well as hyperpigmentation. If you have acne, invest in a good acne treatment like Proactiv or Unblemish and ask your doctor or pharmacist about what to put on other irritations. 6. Touching your Face Everywhere your hands go, from the steering wheel, to the telephone, to counters in stores, they pick up germs and bacteria. Everywhere your hands touch your face, they leave bacteria behind. Bacteria can cause other skin irritations to become infected. Always wash your hands before touching your face or applying skin products. 7. Over-Washing, Scrubbing & Using Hot Water Wash your face twice a day with warm water, washing gently without scrubbing. Only wash your face a third time if you exercise enough to get sweaty or apply makeup that needs to be removed. Use a face wash that meets your skin's specific needs. Over-washing, scrubbing, using the wrong soap for your skin, and hot water can irritate and even damage the skin. 8. Getting Stressed Stress manifests itself on your skin in many ways: rosacea, rashes and redness; acne and blemishes; dark circles under the eyes; and dullness all indicate you are not getting enough sleep. 9. Not Getting Enough Exercise You can slather as much product on your face as you want, but if you are not getting enough exercise, you are depriving your body of the oxygen and nutrients it needs for its best health and for the health of your skin. Exercise also relieves stress, and as noted above, stress can ruin your complexion. 10. Not Getting Enough Sleep Your skin repairs itself at night while you are sleeping. This is why many skin care products must be applied at night -- when the skin is most receptive to the medicines. Give your skin eight hours of sleep at night to keep your skin in its best shape. To achieve that second quality, some people use artificial sunlight in the form of tanning beds. There are notorious side effects from conventional tanning, but the use of an alternative - spray tanning - is slowly gaining fans, sometimes to hilarious effect. Holdouts who tan in a UV bed have their firm reasons, and converts to spray tans have theirs as well. Megan Jorgensen, a freshman elementary education major at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, said she used a tanning bed before, but only before formal dances. She liked the way the added color made her look in her formal wear. She said there was a little bit of peer pressure to have it done, but the main reason was to "make you feel more comfortable in your skin," which it did. Jorgensen said she feared spray tanning would make her look like an Oompa-Loompa. The fear of looking bright-orange is not just confined to Jorgensen; the worry this cosmetic procedure will result in irregular results was common among those interviewed. Aversion to spray tanning could be unfortunate, based on a scholarly, peer-reviewed article "Tanning bed exposure increases risk of malignant melanoma" that appeared in the International Journal of Dermatology in 2007. The article stated, "The (use) of tanning beds was found to be a significant risk factor for the development of melanoma." Elizabeth Thomas, a senior nutrition science major, thought it was interesting that people who work out regularly seem more likely to go tanning, running health risks. Tanning can lead to cancer, which exercise helps prevent. She also mused that people might just tan to make their teeth look whiter. Kristina Debus, a freshman communications major, said she was afraid of the potential irregular, streaky outcome from spray tanning. "I don't want that to happen," she said. But she said contrary to popular belief, tanning can have positive effects for people with Seasonal Affective Disorder, or winter blues. Shantel Gassman, a junior psychology major, said she goes tanning during the winter but only about four times a month at most. She said some of her friends have spray-tanned with terrible results. "One of my friends did it the day before prom," she said. "It was not even and started to come off. It was really bad." None of the women said they had a significant attraction to people who were more tan. Two of them said they thought it was weird for guys to tan. Jennason Kuhn, a tanning consultant at Tanning Zone on 200 N. 66th St., said the dominant demographic for tanning is women, though there are quite a few men who tan as well. To reduce the risks involved with tanning, Kuhn said Tanning Zone clean the booths with medical-grade cleaners and keep a log of when customers tan to prevent people from over-tanning. Customers are only allowed to tan once a day and no one is allowed to tan if they look like they are burned. Kuhn admitted there are health risks involved with tanning and said the spray tanning irregularities are becoming much less prevalent. She said spray tanning should work fine. "They have been perfecting the formula and there are no adverse health effects as long as the instructions are adhered to and the nose-plugs are worn," she said.
