Non-profit shares great outdoors' beauty - San Jose Mercury News

A Christian-based non-profit organization continues sending a non-denominational message about the importance of loving all children unconditionally.

Today's Youth Matter has been reaching 8 to 18 year olds living within the marginalized group of foster care by providing lasting, caring relationships that promote healthy development, positive relationships and the capacity to truly care for and about oneself since coming to Milpitas in the late 1990s, says Executive Director Marilyn Siden.

According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, approximately 463,000 children were in foster care across the nation on Sept. 30, 2009.

The organization reaches some of these children, with more than 250 youth coming to different

weeklong summer camps in the Santa Cruz wilderness, free of charge. Siden said it is their hope that in the company of caring adults the children progress along an emotional journey that leaves many transformed with a greater sense of self. After that the youth participate in other activities (determined by their age) like backpacking, snow camps, parties and monthly get-togethers on a regular basis throughout the year. Last month, Siden went whitewater rafting on the South Fork of the American River to share the beauty of the outdoors with the children.

She said immersing those enrolled in nature to better their lives is something that began at the organization's inception.

"I think it's a question that I can best answer looking at

my own life and there is something amazing about the outdoors," Siden said. "I mean you take a kid who's an inner-city kid. They know that their bathtub is made of lead so if bullets are flying that's where they go (but they) have not a clue what to do when the sun goes down."

In that way, she continues explaining, camping is an equalizer and also a place of positive discovery for the many who have never seen a satellite, stars, meteor shower or wildlife.

Siden added it is also a wonderful

opportunity to learn about lifelong skills like self-reliance through experiences like living in a tipi, cooking their own meals and building their own fires.

Jamere Crawford, 21, is just one of many who has benefited from the program.

He didn't start school until fourth grade and without the academic and social setting Crawford said he was socially awkward and constantly angry.

He began with Today's Youth Matter when he was 10, returned at age 13 and was a summer staff program director this year in an effort to pass along those lessons he has learned.

Crawford attends Holy Names University in Oakland after graduating from Orindo High School in San Lorenzo in 2007. He is the first in his family to go to college.

"I never really imagined graduating high school to tell you the truth," Crawford said. "There were a lot of statistics in my life that I shouldn't have ended up graduating high school and to end up going to college is even more of a shock to everything. ... It's a big accomplishment but it's never fully complete until I accomplish the goals I have in mind."

Some of these dreams include graduating with his bachelor's degree in national relations to teach political science, being a coach and creating his own youth center in the "bottoms of Oakland," Crawford said. "I feel like if we're going to face our problems we need to go to the source to kind of get to the bottom of everything else."

He credits the Milpitas organization and its staff for ultimately repaving his way in life.

"I think it's a thing that people have touched my life so it's my turn to touch other people's lives and I think that's a responsibility that falls on me deeply," Crawford said. "I kind of look at it as looking out for my future. ... It's been different not being a camper but it's been exciting to see all these kids and growth and a kid that you say, ÔHe reminds me of me when I was little.'"

Although Crawford had attended outdoor camps previous to joining the organization, he said the experience was much different.

"It kinda brings everything together and you just enjoy being a kid," Crawford said of Today's Youth Matter. He recalls enjoying an ice cream fight most of all the activities at camp.

Although this is an activity rarely condoned, Siden said there are specific reasons it is within their camp.

"I think that the things I've observed going into many, many homes of kids is the first thing that goes out of dysfunctional families is laughter and light," she said. "The curtains are always pulled, around the clock, in usually smoke-filled houses with no laughter. No just you put your head back and you just laugh until you pee in your pants. It's crucial. We take ourselves so seriously. ... Yeah the kids are dirty when they go home and yeah ice cream is sticky. ... It's just bringing laughter back into kids' lives."

Siden said this is important for those children whose parents leave them, are put in charge of their siblings and, in turn, lose their innocence.

"So where's their childhood?" she asks. "How can you go from childhood to adulthood without finding the wonder in things?"

Aside from the immediate fun and gratification of camp and its many activities, Crawford added there are also lifelong benefits. One thing he has gained are relationships with people who have fostered his growth throughout the years, including Steve Buckner, a previous program director, now Crawford's godfather.

"From there he became a family member in my eyes," he said. "Everybody in the staff became a part of my life."

Siden said it is watching changes like this occur that has touched her life as an adult.

"I can't think of anything more delightfully wonderful than to watch a Jamere Crawford come to camp," she said. "I just can't imagine doing anything more fun, more fulfilling."

Siden said the idea to bring a program like this to Milpitas occurred after volunteering for a similar program in Oregon. When she married her husband 21 years ago, who then lived in the Bay Area, Siden moved here and decided to start a similar program. She said after many years it is still evolving, especially because they are trying to do more with less. They operate on a $260,000 budget a year but Siden said she would like this to grow to the $310,000 range in the near future.
