HAMILTON — Everyone has a part to play to improve health. The solution is to think — and act — locally.

This was the theme of the April 9 Madison County Symposium for a Healthier Madison County. Everyone has a contribution that they can make to promote positive change. Every level of involvement counts, no matter how small.

The symposium, attended by businesses, organizations, and community leader, sought to increase awareness and gain commitment to advance community-wide initiatives and solutions to improve health. The symposium focused on the four priority health issues for Madison County. The priority issues are: public policy, community economic development, health literacy, and access to health care.

During the symposium Sen. David J. Valesky, D-49, and Assemblyman William Magee, D-111, were presented with framed images of the winning artwork by Artist Catherine Bennett, representing the Community Vision for a Healthy Madison County characterized by "values that protect its agricultural traditions, rich history, and natural scenic beauty."

"It was exciting to see everyone at the Symposium making a personal or organizational commitment to work towards the community vision," said Eric Faisst, the Madison County Public Health director. "There is such a strong community spirit in Madison County and together we can build a healthier county."

Do your part and keep the momentum going. Create a ripple effect of positive change to achieve the Vision for a Healthy Madison County. Draw attention to the four local priority health issues, alert your town and village representatives about model practices, promote the Vision for a Healthy Madison County, organize an event, talk with your local media, or get involved with a priority health issue committee at any time — signup by emailing health@co.madison.ny.us.

The symposium for a Healthier Madison County, held at Colgate University, was sponsored by the Madison County Health Department and the Upstate Institute at Colgate University.

To learn more about the priority health issues, visit the Madison County Health Department website and click on the "Health Information" link. Go to:
