| L.A. hospital 'beauty salon' claims refuted - San Francisco Gate Posted: 20 May 2010 06:33 AM PDT (05-20) 04:00 PDT Los Angeles - -- An investigation into allegations that Olive View-UCLA Medical Center workers performed manicures in an intensive care unit for newborns found little evidence of a makeshift beauty salon but discovered a minor medication error and that a baby was almost dropped on the hospital floor, health officials said Wednesday. Of the 80 hospital workers interviewed in the county investigation, 16 said they received free nail or eyebrow services while on breaks from another employee, said Carol Meyer, county health chief of operations. In two instances, an unoccupied neonatal intensive care unit suite was used at the county-run hospital, but the services were typically provided in a break room or locker room. The investigation found no evidence of negative patient outcomes for babies at Olive View, said Meyer, adding that "in 9,000 neonatal intensive care days, there were no unexpected deaths." The investigation did find that a baby squirmed free of a nurse while being weighed but was caught by the legs and buttocks before hitting the floor. It was one of 11 allegations of faulty care previously made in an anonymous complaint to the Joint Commission, a national hospital accreditation organization. "No organized cosmetic operation on the scale of what was described as a 'beauty salon' ever occurred," Meyer said. Another anonymous allegation involved medication errors, burns and bed sores. The investigation found one instance where temporary harm was caused to a baby because of an unspecified medication error. "It was something very minor and lasted for a short period of time and no harm was done to the patient permanently," Meyer said. In another instance, the unit's board-certified neonatologist once failed to respond to a page. Two employees were placed on paid leave after the allegations were made and have not yet been returned to work. No further reprimands were being issued, though staff will undergo counseling and retraining on policies, Meyer said. Joint Commission spokeswoman Elizabeth Eaken Zhani said the matter remained under investigation by that agency, and further details couldn't be released. The complaints, first reported by the Los Angeles Times, alleged the smell of nail polish remover was strong inside the intensive care unit, and a doctor had a French manicure atop a ventilator. Meyer said that was impossible because the ventilator machines are as tall as the nurses.
