Grocery chain issues pet food recall

Retail grocery chain Kroger Co. is recalling some brands of dog and cat foods from Chicago area shelves because they may contain a substance that can sicken pets.

Stores affected by the recall include Kroger stores in Illinois and Indiana, as well as Food 4 Less stores in the Chicago area, according to a Kroger Co. release issued Saturday. Jay C, Hilander, Owen's, Pay Less and Scott's stores in Illinois and Indiana are also affected, as well as stores in 15 other states.

The various pet food products are being recalled because they may contain aflatoxin, a naturally-occurring chemical by-product produced by a fungus found on corn and other crops, according to the release.

The substance may sicken pets, and owners whose pets show any signs of illness, sluggishness or lethargy combined with a reluctance to eat should consult a veterinarian immediately, the release said. Other symptoms include a yellowish tint to the eyes or gums, and severe or bloody diarrhea.

Recalled products have "sell-by" dates of Oct. 23 or 24 and include various sized packages of Pet Pride Cat Food, Pet Pride Tasty Blend Poultry & Seafood Cat Food, Pet Pride Kitten Formula Food, Old Yeller Chunk Dog Food and Kroger Value Cat Food and Kroger Value Chunk Dog Food, the release said.

Pet owners are urged to check their products and can call Kroger toll-free at (800) 632-6900 with questions, the release said.

Customers who purchased a recalled item can return it for a full refund or replacement, the release said. Kroger's Customer Recall Notification system is alerting customers who may have purchased these products through register receipt tape messages and automated phone calls.
