KC detectives honored for stopping thefts of beauty products - Kansas City Star Posted: 20 Jan 2011 07:30 AM PST
By CHRISTINE VENDELThe Kansas City StarTwo Kansas City detectives who helped bust a fencing operation that reportedly moved more than $3 million in stolen beauty products last year were honored at a police board meeting this morning. Two officers who stopped a man from committing suicide also received awards at the 9 a.m. meeting at police headquarters. Property crimes detectives Chad Herriman and Tod Reaves heard about the fencing operation from an informant in May. The informant said she was stealing health and beauty products and selling them — for pennies on the dollar — to a man and his mother, who told her items to pilfer. The informant was just one of several "boosters" used by the man and mother, police said. The man and his mother resold the stolen goods at swap-and-shops and flea markets, police said. The detectives went undercover and arranged five sales to the man and his mother, using $6,800 worth of merchandise provided from Target and CVS for the stings. The man and his mother paid $990 for the goods. Police then raided the suspects' homes and businesses. Officers recovered more than 24,300 stolen items, worth an estimated $177,000. The man told police he had paid boosters $720,000 last year, which represented about 20 percent of the value of the merchandise. Police Chief Jim Corwin gave meritorious service awards to Herriman and Reaves. He gave certificates of appreciate to officials from CVS and Target and a special unit citation to members of the Central Patrol Property Crimes section and tactical team 1. Officers Derek Merrill and Scott Mullen received life-saving awards for their efforts to stop a man from killing himself in July. The man had sent a photo of himself hanging by a belt to his girlfriend. She called police. Merrill and Mullen forced their way into the man's bedroom in a Midtown apartment. They found the man, who had turned purple and was not breathing. They cut the belt and one officer slapped him on the back with a cupped hand. The man gasped for air. The officers rubbed his sternum to keep him breathing. Ex-Beauty Queen Pleads Guilty To Theft - msnbc.com Posted: 20 Jan 2011 11:12 AM PST HONOLULU — KITV.com A 37-year-old former Hawaii teen beauty queen changed her plea in court Thursday on charges of identity theft and money laundering. Trying to hide her face from the cameras, Susan Shaw quietly spoke to the judge. "Guilty," said Shaw. After pleading guilty to all 140 counts including identity theft, credit card theft, forgery and money laundering, the mother of two faces a future behind bars. "Why is Susan Shaw being targeted? Why is she being made an example?" asked her attorney Myles Breiner. Shaw will be back in court on May 4, for sentencing. She faces a minimum of 20 years to life in prison. "She committed these crimes against all these victims and we were not going to dismiss cases where she victimized people. It's just that simple," said Honolulu Deputy Prosecutor Chris Van Marter. The defense argued that Shaw suffered from schizophrenia and was abused, so that she could be allowed into the mental health court system. "So far, we've seen attempts by her to avoid responsibility coming up with the abuse excuse and pretending like her conduct was because of a mental health problem. It's not," said Van Marter. "The fact that she's a statuesque attractive woman and that she has this public persona attracted attention, and it gave rise to a lot of people thinking she shouldn't get special treatment," said Breiner. "When you come to the sentencing you'll see that her alleged abuse at her school in Texas is a bunch of nonsense," said Van Marter.
