“Eye on L.A. explores SoCal's beauty know-how - KABC” plus 1 more

Eye on L.A. explores SoCal's beauty know-how - KABC

Posted: 29 Jan 2011 06:32 PM PST

This week's Eye on L.A. is all about bringing together the places and people in SoCal who know a thing or two about aging beautifully.

So if you're ready to look and feel better than ever, let's get started with your skin.

The world-renowned Dr. Howard Murad reveals how he helps women get glowing, younger looking skin by fighting the signs of genetic, environmental and hormonal aging [Watch video].

Dr. Murad's skin tips:

Tip 1: Increase your emotional well-being
Reduce your isolation, join a group or participate in a physical activity. Also, smile and laugh freely. There's no better way to improve your sense of connection than meeting new people and spending time with those you love. Your happiness will be reflected in your health and appearance.

Tip 2: Reflect on the positive
Studies have shown that optimistic people live longer and more fulfilling lives. Even if you feel down, focusing on one positive thing can instantly improve your mood. Each night before you go to bed, write down three good things that happened to you that day. This is my No.1 recommendation to improve emotional self care.

Tip 3: Pamper yourself
Your health and appearance are positively influenced by increasing your emotional and mental well-being. Whether it's for a facial, massage or even a pedicure, a visit to the spa is a foolproof way to promote stress relief and relaxation. Book an appointment at your local spa. It's just what the doctor ordered.

Tip 4: Optimize your sleep
Use topical and internal products with ingredients such as melatonin and GABA that add depth to your sleep and your skin's sleep repair cycle. Getting the right amount of sleep helps ensure that you are alert and focused. Try to get a minimum of eight hours a night.

Tip 5: Get regular exercise
Exercise improves digestion, metabolism and endocrine function so that your entire body is functioning at an optimal level. Yoga and hiking are great ways to not only exercise your body, but also calm your mind and spirit. But, most importantly, you should find an exercise regimen you love so you will stick with it. Try to exercise a minimum of 30 minutes every day.

Tip 6: Adopt a healty diet
Follow the guidelines of Dr. Murad's Pitcher of Health" to create a diet designed to improve cell hydration and to minimize both free radicals and inflammation. Not only will a Murad diet drastically improve your complexion, eating for wellness will also improve your energy and boost your basil metabolic rate. Eat right so you've got the energy you'll need to enjoy your days to the fullest.

Tip 7: Eat your water
Colorful raw fruits and vegetables contain structured water. It's the best form of water for your cells because it stays in your system long enough for your body to put it to good use. Don't let a hectic schedule knock you off your nutritional game. Make eating well a priority every day.

Tip 8: Take dietary supplements
Think of your daily supplements as insurance that guarantees you'll maintain the nutrient levels you need to look and live your best. Glucosamine, for example, increases total body water content, while amino acids aid in the formation of collagen and elastin. It is important to take care of yourself inside and out so that your body is working at its optimal level.

Tip 9: Connect to your community
Get plugged in and seek out new ways to give back. There are so many ways to make a positive difference in your community. When you help make a difference in other people's lives, you'll feel good about yourself and you'll experience real joy and satisfaction.

Tip 10: Surround yourself with people you care about
Not only will you reduce isolation, but you will boost your emotional health and happiness. Maintaining a healthy connection to yourself and your loved ones and ensuring you are surrounding yourself with a positive social environment will nurture your psyche.

Known for her thorough and personal approach to skincare, Nerida has personally done more than 50,000 facials. Her clients include some of the most famous faces in the world. She shared her secrets on how to turn back the clock with Eye on L.A.

Nerida's skin tips:

Tip 1: Sunscreen
Sunscreen for women in their 30s should contain both the physical and chemical sun protection for total spectrum protection. Physical sun protection ingredients are zinc and titanium dioxide, which are important protectors when you're active outdoors. Nerida suggests sunblocks over SPF 40 that are non-comedogenic in an array of tints and textures to match any skin type and tone.

Tip 2: Skin pH
Do not upset the skin's pH by over-washing your face or by using a foaming detergent cleanser. Surface dryness is a huge problem in dry skin and also in oily/combination skin. It's confusing to some consumers to understand the concept of "dry on top and oily underneath," where on some days their skin feels dry and some days it feels oily. So, in order to keep the skin soft, don't dry it out topically with foaming cleaners. Your cleanser is 50 percent of your skin regimen so keep it gentle, wash regularly, twice a day, and thoroughly with circular movements.

Nerida is offering a free 20-minute consultation and cleanser to Eye on L.A. viewers. Just mention "Eye on L.A." when you call.

Kids accompany Alice down the rabbit hole at Asheville's Health Adventure - Asheville Citizen-Times

Posted: 29 Jan 2011 09:10 PM PST

ASHEVILLE — Things are getting curiouser and curiouser over at The Health Adventure in Pack Place.

Alice has arrived in town, along with the Mad Hatter, the Cheshire Cat, the White Rabbit and other characters from Lewis Carroll's classic "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland."

With this new traveling exhibit, called "Alice's Wonderland … A Most Curious Adventure," children and agile adults are invited to "fall" through the rabbit hole and begin a whimsical journey to a place where things aren't as they seem and the bizarre becomes ordinary.

It's a recipe for delight for children familiar with the beloved tale of the girl who falls asleep on a streamside knoll and has a most extraordinary dream.

"Look, Alice is getting bigger and smaller," 8-year-old Oliver Kompathoun said Saturday as he watched a prism-like device spin around, giving the illusion that Alice was shrinking and growing right before his eyes.

"My favorite part is where she meets the Red Queen," said Oliver, a third-grader at Bruce Drysdale Elementary School in Hendersonville. "I like the croquet game with the flamingos."

"Alice's Wonderland" offers 1,800 square feet of hands-on experiences, beginning with the short journey through the rabbit hole into the Hall of Doors, where special illusions and surprises await.

Throughout the exhibit, giant playing cards bear quotes from the original book to help children make the connection between the words and the related activity being offered.

"Down, down, down — would the fall never come to an end?" reads a large placard beside an optical illusion mimicking a slow freefall that greets children as they emerge from the rabbit hole.

That was almost-5-year-old James Wallace's favorite part: tunneling through the hole.

"It really did feel like I was in a rabbit hole," he said, as he wandered through the exhibit with his dad, Jay Wallace, of Fairview, and his little sister Grace.

Elsewhere in the exhibit is a table set for active play at a "mad tea party," a reflective screen where kids can press a button and see their face "become" the Cheshire Cat and plastic flamingos and a stuffed hedgehog for a game of "Crazy Croquet."

(2 of 2)

There also are a number of science- and math-based components, such as a zoetrope featuring a variety of animals, and golf balls that are mysteriously accurate each time they head for the cup.

There is that educational undertone with every traveling exhibit The Health Adventure hosts, said Tracie Perkins, vice president of marketing and development for the museum.

"It's a great way for parents and kids to learn together and explore together," she said. "There are a lot of places for families to go to just have fun, but here, they're also learning together."

The targeted age group for the exhibit is 2-7, but anyone of any age who is familiar with the book will enjoy its whimsy. The colors throughout are big and bold, and there is a sense of quirky fantasy that transports visitors into the heart of Alice's story.

"It's for younger children, but I like it, too," Perkins said, almost in a confessional tone. "That's the beauty of something like this — I didn't know what a zoetrope (which produces an illusion with rapid successions of images) was until now."

“Basic Beauty Tips to Keep Your Hair Beautiful - Associated Content”

Basic Beauty Tips to Keep Your Hair Beautiful - Associated Content

Posted: 28 Jan 2011 04:03 PM PST

One of the things that seem to give many women trouble is their hair. It is often flat or dry or messy or tangled and does not seem to be cooperative when you need it to be. When you are on your way to work or
school, you need your hair to cooperate, and when you are going out to meet friends or on a date, you want it to look even better than usual. But, often it hangs flat and appears lifeless and you don't know how to fix it. The days when hairspray solved all are over and so now it is hard to achieve that full, lush appearance. However, if you maintain your hair regularly, you will find that the overall quality and health of your hair improves and you will be able to manage it in great ways whenever you need to the most.

Part of managing your hair occurs in the shower when you wash it. Shampooing your hair is important, but it is also important to make sure that you wash all of the shampoo out of your hair. Leaving it in your hair will actually cause you to leave toxic residue that is not good for your hair or scalp. So make sure you thoroughly rinse it out and get it all out so that you wash away all the dirt and debris from your hair. Make sure that you always use conditioner or else you will not be adding any moisture to your hair.

Hair gets dry from daily wear against the sun and depending on the climate where you live and the type of chemicals in your daily water, your hair is constantly being attacked upon. That is why conditioning your hair is so essential to the health and strength of your hair. Adding conditioning allows you to infuse moisture and essential oils and nutrients that keep your hair soft and protected. Most conditioners require you to leave it in for a while to really soak up all of the good qualities, so reserve about three minutes to leave it in and absorb before rinsing it out. Another tip is to untangle and part your hair the way you want it to be while it is wet. That way, when you get out, your hair will dry in the form that you desire it to be in and you will not have to worry about tangles and other kinds of conflicts.

Boomers' Online Shopping Outpaces Gen Y for Health, Beauty, Food, Beverage Products - Yahoo Finance

Press Release Source: The Integer Group On Wednesday January 12, 2011, 3:49 pm EST

DENVER, Jan. 12, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Despite shopping in general being down, online shopping has increased. 73 percent of shoppers who are buying more online are NOT shopping more -- they are just shopping differently. This was revealed in The Checkout, a newsletter that compiles data from the ongoing shopper experience study currently underway by The Integer Group ® and M/A/R/C ® Research.

"The number one reason why people decide to purchase online is to get a better deal. This is no surprise. When shoppers hunt for a singular item online, they search for a good price, attractive shipping options, and then they buy," said Randy Wahl, executive vice president, M/A/R/C Research.

While younger generations (18-24 year-olds) appear more comfortable shopping online, they continue to stick with 'safe' purchases in categories that historically, are purchased online (electronics, clothing, books and music). The surprise comes from the boomer shopper segment. When considering the somewhat newer CPG online shopping world (health, beauty, food, beverage), it's the older shoppers making these purchases. Although Gen Y may be increasing their overall online shopping (more than twice as many compared to 50-64 year-olds), they are not as quick to adopt when it comes to experimenting with making purchases in new categories. This behavior also seems to surface with marital status—married individuals are 58 percent more likely to buy food and beverage products online than single individuals.

"Categories that require hunting for multiple items at once, like food and beverage or health and beauty, introduces a new online buying mentality," said Craig Elston, senior vice president, Integer. "The concept of completing standard grocery shopping online is still new for most of us, and manufacturers and e-tailers need to understand that there are conventions ingrained in shopper behavior that they must disrupt."

Overall, the majority of shoppers still have trouble adapting to the world of online CPG. In the food and beverage category, nearly half of shoppers are currently saying they "haven't and never will" buy this category online.

Data for The Checkout comes from a national survey conducted by Integer and M/A/R/C where consumers are asked about their shopping attitudes, shopping behaviors, and economic outlook. Topics range from criteria shoppers use to select retailers, to which in-store stimulus is most likely to drive purchase, to factors that might lead shoppers to leave an aisle empty-handed. The Checkout is available for download at Integer's blog www.ShopperCulture.com or M/A/R/C's web site www.MARCresearch.com/thecheckout.

“Natural Beauty and Health Care- Understanding Labels - Associated Content” plus 1 more

“Natural Beauty and Health Care- Understanding Labels - Associated Content” plus 1 more

Natural Beauty and Health Care- Understanding Labels - Associated Content

Posted: 26 Jan 2011 04:13 PM PST

What you're reading on that beauty bottle may not mean what you think it means. In our search for more natural beauty and health care, we often look for over the counter products that make promises of being
"safe", "natural" or "tested". But what do all of these words really mean in terms of our health?

You might be surprised to know that many do not mean what you think they do.

"Dermatologist tested"- When you read these words on a product, you probably think this means the product was tested and approved by a skin specialist. However, there are many parameters under which such a test may have fallen and the product makers would still be able to print these words. It could mean that there was a legitimate, controlled trial or it could be that staffers in the office tried the product or anywhere in between. You can never be certain just because the words are on the bottle or box.

"Oil-free"- If the label says oil-free, it doesn't necessarily mean there is no oil at all in the product. While it's true that products labeled "oil free" do not contain certain ingredients such as mineral oil or plant oils. However, it could still clog your pores or make your skin greasy because it might still have oil-like products. Types of waxes, vegetable oils and even silicones could still be in the oil-free products.

"Hypoallergenic-free" - If it's listed as hypoallergenic free, you probably think that it won't cause allergic reactions like other products might. I as well as my children have a variety of allergies so this is the type of thing I really take interest in. However, just because it says hypoallergenic on the packaging does not mean it is guaranteed to not cause a reaction or even that it is less likely than other products. Cosmetic companies are not required to prove their claims of hypoallergenic-free so your best course of action is just to buy products from known, trusted sources.

Best Beauty Buys to Turn Back the Clock - CBS News

Posted: 26 Jan 2011 06:33 AM PST

(CBS)  Looking for the fountain of youth? Until you find it, you'll have to make do with anti-aging products. But with so many on the market, you may be wondering, what really works?

On "The Early Show" Wednesday, Melissa Goldstein, beauty director of Better Homes and Gardens magazine, shared all the latest, cutting-edge products to help you turn back the hands of time -- or at least slow them down.

Goldstein said prevention is the best medicine for anti-aging.

She said, "Sunscreen is the best anti-ager out there. ... But as far as anti-aging products, most not only fix damage, but also ward off future damage. To get on a preventative regimen, you can start in your 30s. There are lots of anti-aging products out there, but if you really want to hit the fountain of youth, you have to choose the right products!"

Goldstein then shared these Better Homes and Gardens favorites:

Target Area: All Over Face
Olay Professional Pro-X Intensive Firming Treatment, $52

This was actually just chosen by 50,000 consumers as Better Homes and Gardens Best New Product. It has two products inside -- a serum for day and a mask for night. The mask contains the equivalent of an entire bottle of serum. It will plump and firm your skin. It's a five-day program, so it's not for everyday, but perfect for that special occasion to give you that quick boost of radiance. $52 at Walmart.com.

Zeno Line Rewind Wrinkle Reduction Kit, $40
Most people know the Zeno name from their zit zapping light. Now they've joined the age fit with their latest creation. The Zeno Line Rewind mimics the LED lights dermatologists offer in their offices. The kit includes a peptide and anti-oxidant rich serum that you apply to your skin and then turn on the device which warms up and gently massages the serum into your skin, minimizing wrinkles and sun damage. At-home beauty devices continue to be a huge trend for this year. $40 at Walmart.com.

Target Area: Crows Feet and Under Eyes
Roc Retinol Correxion Sensitive Eye Cream, $27

Retinol is the gold standard for wrinkle reduction, but it can be very harsh on sensitive skin -- especially the delicate skin around the eyes, so this little product will create a big wave. This is serious retinol in an irritant-free formula. I consider it a "Miracle in a Bottle!" $27 at Soap.com .

Target Area: Lips/Mouth
Bite Beauty Lipsticks $20-24

The first thing you want in a lip product is really great moisture. You also want good anti-oxidant protection. These lipsticks from Bite Beauty contain resveratrol -- the same antioxidant you find in red wine. Resveratrol is a powerful antioxidant that comes from the skins of grapes. In fact, the resveratrol content in each tube is equivalent to 5 glasses of red wine! Resveratrol helps reduce wrinkles and the appearance of fine lines. According to Dr. Oz, "It turns on a system in your body that prevents your cells from aging. Now think about it. Where do they grow these grapes? On trees on hillsides, right? It's not a very hospitable environment. So those grapes are sending a signal to us that life might not be so good, so why not turn on that cellular chemistry that you have that allows you to live longer and better? That's why we think this has a benefit."

We're getting a special preview of this item because it's not available until March 2011 for $20-24 at Sephora and Sephora.com. In the meantime, there are other ways to get resveratrol. You can get it in drink form or even in the form of these vitamin chews -- both products from Genesis Today.

Target Area: Eyebrows
TouchBack Brow Marker $20

TouchBack became famous years ago for developing a marker that allowed you to literally color your gray. Their newest product is to cover those grey hairs that pop up in your eyebrows and the felt-tip makes it a really great product for filling in sparse brows as well. $20 on Touchbackbrow.com.

Target Area: Hair
John Frieda Full Repair Shampoo & Conditioner $7 each

We all damage our hair on a daily basis. From coloring and chemicals to blowdrying and straightening, our hair is overworked. John Frieda Full Repair Shampoo and Conditioner contains inca inchi, which is a lightweight omega 3 oil to replenish and infuse life back into your hair. $7 each at Drugstore.com.

(Based on information provided by John Freida) There are other great hair boosting products that can make our hair look fuller, which is a sign of youth. From Living Proof, check out their Full Thickening Mouse ($24). The Full Mousse contains the amazing new technology created by MIT scientists, poly beta amino ester-1 that creates little dots on the hair that act as repelling magnets that make the hair appear thicker. There's also a pre-shampoo treatment from Umberto Beverly Hills. Called Collage Pre-Shampoo Treatment Shampoo ($9.99, sold exclusively at Target,) it's a therapy aimed at repaired the hair from the inside out. The Collagen Pre-Shampoo is formulated to plump the hair cuticle and seal surface of the hair. This is a leave-in treatment that requires only 10 minutes.

Target Area: A more radiant you!
Turquoise Accessories

You wake up, you're having a bad day and none of your beauty products are helping? WEAR TURQUOISE!! There's something about that shade of blue that give your face extra uumph! And brightens your whole face up!

Bret Michaels health update: Stable and ready for surgery - AZCentral.com

The Arizona Republic

Doctors at St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix are moving ahead today with surgery to repair a small hole in the heart of Scottsdale-based rocker and reality-TV star Bret Michaels.

Michaels checked into the hospital Sunday, and conditions with his Type 1 diabetes appear to be stable enough to allow today's surgery to proceed.

Michaels told The Arizona Republic last week that his blood-sugar levels had to be monitored and in an acceptable range before the operation could proceed.

The singer, 47, was treated at the hospital in April for a brain hemorrhage that doctors said could have been fatal. Michaels said he now is about 95 percent recovered from that episode.

During that treatment, it was determined that he suffered from a patent foramen ovale (PFO), or hole in the heart.

Michaels will undergo a cardiac catheterization during which doctors will insert a catheter into a vein in the groin and guide wires and a PFO closure device into the heart, according to hospital spokeswoman Carmelle Malkovich.

The device will remain in Michaels' heart permanently to stop abnormal blood flow between the two chambers of the heart. That condition is believed to have caused a small stroke that Michaels suffered last year, Malkovich said.

The singer, who lives in north Scottsdale with his fiancee, Kristi Gibson, and their two children, will be monitored following the procedure to ensure that there are no complications.

Without treatment for the PFO, Michaels could be at risk for developing blood clots and additional strokes, Malkovich said.

Michaels, who performs with the band Poison and as a solo artist, has toured in the past several months, and he appeared Saturday at the Barrett-Jackson car auction in Scottsdale to sell a 1969 Camaro, which brought $200,000.

Benenden's 'New You' Campaign Urges Women to Put their Health Before Beauty - YAHOO!

Posted: 24 Jan 2011 08:37 AM PST

Study prompts fears that women are putting looks ahead of their general wellbeing.

York, UK (PRWEB) January 24, 2011

Four in ten British women are more worried about their looks than their health, according to recently released research.

The study revealed that women are more prepared to spend money on products which give the impression they are healthy - rather than healthy products.

Nearly 19 per cent admit to crash-dieting and one in twenty have resorted to laxatives to squeeze into tight-fitting fashions.

And four per cent said they ended up suffering from an eating disorder to look their best for a night out.

Eight in ten would be encouraged to continue their bad habits if they received a compliment, and one in five would 'do anything' to get into a size eight pair of jeans.

Yesterday, a spokesman for mutual health care provider Benenden Healthcare Society, which carried out the study, said: "It would be wrong to say that these results come as a surprise, as so many of us are guilty of taking shortcuts to ensure we look good - often at the expense of our health.

"There's a real danger that British women are becoming too focused on what they look like and forgetting to look after their inner health. They become obsessed with the latest beauty trends and maintaining a perfect look, but in the end it's just a mirage and they're not caring enough for what's going on inside their bodies. Women can be slim and look good, but it doesn't necessarily mean they're healthy.

"Benenden Healthcare believes strongly that health and wellbeing should be a priority to everyone. The information is out there - particularly on our own website where we are currently running a 'New You' campaign supported by ITV Dancing on Ice's Hayley Tamaddon - so people do have the opportunity to find out how they can prioritise health over beauty.

"Just a few simple steps can often make a big difference to your health and wellbeing and often being healthier leads to being happier."

Dancing on Ice champion and presenter in the current ITV series, Hayley Tamaddon has been lending her support to Benenden Healthcare in recent weeks. Drawing from her own experiences of shaping up for Dancing on Ice and as a young woman in the entertainment industry, Hayley said: "The pressure on young woman in the public eye to look good is huge and it's often extremely unhealthy. I would really encourage all women that their own health and wellbeing should always come first - and it is so true that being healthy can often be a better route to happiness.

"As I've said for Benenden Healthcare's campaign, it's so easy to take a simple few steps in order to make a big difference - really simple things such as drinking plenty of water, cutting down on sugar and doing little bits of exercise here and there like regularly walking the dog."

The study of women aged between 18 and 65 quizzed them on their spending habits and attitudes when faced with either looking good or being healthy.

It found women fork out an average of £336 a year on hair products, make-up and fake tan in a bid to look young, but £228 is spent on vitamins and gym membership.

And while three quarters enjoy spending cash on looking their best, just 41 per cent like heading to the shops for health supplements and nutritional food.

A massive 84 per cent of the 3,000 polled agreed with the statement 'women are more concerned with the way they look than their level of fitness'.

And six in ten would rather live their life to the full and 'embrace life's excesses' rather than worry about 'being squeaky clean'.

The extreme lengths women have gone to in order to keep trim were also exposed - a worrying three per cent admitted to taking up smoking to shed a few pounds and 14 per cent have turned to diet pills.

Two thirds said they are worried they could be completely unaware of a serious health problem, yet one in five have NEVER been for a check-up at the doctors.

And while 56 per cent said they could cover up the effects of a late night with make-up, one in ten try to emulate the lives of Hollywood stars

However, many women realise it's not all about looks. Only eight per cent think being slim automatically means you're healthy and a quarter can tell someone is unhealthy just by looking at them.

Just one in six reckon celebs who are in the spotlight all of the time actual look a picture of health and three quarters make a concise effort to maintain a balanced diet.

More than half (52 per cent) are worried after reading stories about illnesses and the effects of eating the right food in the papers, and one in five regularly go to the gym..

Yet an overwhelming 93 per cent agree that Britain is an unhealthy nation and one in five have had a health scare after wrongly thinking they were fighting fit.
